Chipping the xbox!

You've just bought your xbox, it plays all the latest and coolest pal games....but you want to play american games, you want to play pirate games, you want to play n64 games, you want to view divx movies, all on one box. To do that you need to get your xbox chipped.

I got mine chipped at a place called (London consoles) who were fantastic, very helpful and did a brilliant job. You can also try out yod@ on this forum if you do not live near london or do not want to post your xbox to london. Yod@ is based in N.ireland. Contact both to find out prices and what they can do for you, both have had extreamly good feedback and can be trusted.

My xbox was fitted with an executor 2 lite, you shouldnt need anything else, this chip does it all and is future proof. We wont tell you how to install it here, you can find that out elsewhere, but if you want to do a search on google or xbox-scene.com.

The chip once installed correctly and switched on (make sure your xbox chip always has a switch, so you can turn it off, such as for when using xbox live or if future official games dont work with the chip) you'll get the xbox logo but where it normally says 'Microsoft' it'll now say 'executor 2'. Your xbox has been chipped and now works great.

Playing and burning copied games! But what now, what can you do now. Well for starters you can now play copied xbox games. Just make sure the chip is on, the copied game is in the drive and your xbox is on, and it'll load up straight away. Want guides to learn how to copy and burn xbox games? Look at (Xbox scene) for help.

But you didnt want it to play copies, oh no. You wanted all the cool stuff!

What you need before you start putting stuff on your xbox!

First off we'll explain what is needed. An xbox, a tv and a cd/dvd writer. Thats the basics, but wont get you very far. To put stuff on to your xbox you can either burn it to cdrw or dvdr and play it directly from the disc, this is hard and annoying to do, much easier to put stuff on the hard drive of your xbox, for quick access and changes.

For this you'll need a nic card (a network card) anyone will do, the cheaper the better, as they all do the exact same thing. Heres the one i bought (NIC card) , which was cheaper when i bought it, comes with drivers and the card and works perfectly.

You'll need some cross over cable too, not Cat 5 cable, it has to have 'Cross over' in the name. Heres what i bought (Cross over cable) , 5 meters should be enough, but measure the distance from your pc and xbox then add on a meter or 2 so that you can run it around the room, rather than having your pc and xbox at an angle while the cable is at shin height.

Install your pci card into your pc, install the drivers, now hook up your xbox and pc with the crossover cable.

Time to download an ftp, an ftp means file transfere protocol, means you can send and recieve files from your pc to another pc or to a website. As long as you have access that is. Flashfxp is a good one to use. You can download it at (flashfxp!)

Network settings for your xbox!

Once thats done we'll need to change a few things about your network card. (*NOTE* This part is only for pc's that dont already have a network card installed and already connected to another computer or the internet, so be careful)

Now if your running windows 98 go to RUN in the start menu and then type 'winipcfg' This'll bring up a window telling you all about your network card/s Click on the scroll down menu if you have more than one card installed or you have a usb modem installed. It'll then tell you all the details about your card. You can now close it.

Go to Control panel and click on 'Network'. This'll show you everything about your pc which can be used for networking, such as modems and network cards. Click on your network card you want to use for your xbox and click properties *NOTE* make sure to scroll down the the ip/tcp connections one. From here you need to deslsect 'AUTOMATIC IP' and select to create your own.

In your ip address box type what ever you like, but most people use 192.168.000.001 its the standard if you will

The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.000

Ignore all the other tabs and click ok, your network card should be ready now. But wait, your xbox isnt!

You'll need a copy of evox or evolution x so you can set up your xbox. This version is easiest to use but is also different from other guides on the net. But dont worry this is only temporary and well, its already been made into a nice iso, which is very easy to burn. Download it at (Evox1) . Once the file is downloaded use winrar (www.winrar.com) to unzip it so you can see it, ignore all the files except the iso one, do not try and unzip it with winrar, just leave it alone. *NOTE* You'll need a CDRW, CDR's 99% of the time dont work in xbox's, but many CDRW's do. I use TDK CDRWS as they seem to work perfectly and are very cheap too! I suggest using nero, when in nero go to FILE> Burn image> Select the evox.iso and thats it.

Once its burned, put it into your xbox, with the chip in the on position and it should load, if it doesnt you may need to try a different make CDRW, if it loads hurrah! You'll now have a blue screen with 4 options. Select network with the dpad and accept it with the A button. Now enter your ip address which should be 192.168.000.002 for the xbox using the dpad once again/ The 2 signifys the xbox being the second connection, your pc being 192.168.000.001 Enter the gate way as 255.255.255.000

Now then push the back button on your xbox pad, and reboot using the on screen menu. Once the xbox has booted up to the blue screen again go to your pc, start up flashfxp. Click file > Quick login.

Enter the ip address here as 192.168.0.2 (thats your xbox one again) you may need to enter the username and password as 'xbox' (for both) but it probably wont be needed. Make sure the port number is 21.

Click connect and within a matter of 1 second your xbox should be connected. If it isnt, then you've done something wrong, make sure you check everything is as here.

If you have connected...WELL DONE!

IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!!!

Now then, this is VERY IMPORTANT. If you do not follow this your xbox could be buggered up forever. So listen carefully. On the right hand side of flashfxp there are about 5 folders all begining with a letter. Copy over the C and E folders to your pc, keep them somewhere handy, and even burn them to cdr at a later date. The C folder is what your xbox uses to run controllers, games everything, if even 1 file corrupts or is deleted your xbox will not start! Your E drive is your save games. You can ignore the other one for now, dont touch them.

Once you have copied over both drives then you can begin to instal evo x on your xbox hard drive. Download (Evox2!). Its another version of evo x but you DONT need to burn it onto cd. Once its downloaded, again unrar it but dont touch anything, you'll notice another iso, an evox.ini file and a defualt.xbe. Go to your xbox hard drive and click on C:\

You'll now see loads of files, touching any of these will mean your xbox may bugger up, so read carefully.

Find the xboxdash.xbe file on your xbox and rename it to msxboxdash.xbe. Now copy over the evox.ini file to your c drive on your xbox. Now the defualt.xbe file that was in that zip folder for evox2, rename to xboxdash.xbe and copy over to the c drive on your xbox. Once that is done take out the cdrw from your xbox and reboot it. If you have done everything correctly then after the xbox logo you'll get a nice blue evo x screen and loads of options! Well done again!

*IF you get a 'Your xbox is broken, please take it to a dealer' then pray, thank the lord and thank me, as im about to save your xbox. Remember the C and E drive you copied over to your pc? Well copy them back over to the xbox, over writting anything it asks to over write. Ta da! Your xbox is back to normal, now follow the guide properly this time!*

Now thats all sorted you can now put stuff onto your xbox. You can have a look through some of the option on screen. I'll detail each one here so you know what each one does and what ones not to touch, you can ignore the next section if you wish but you should read it.

The appearance of your EvolutionX Dashboard and the menu items that you see are all dependant on the evox.ini file. At this point in time you will be able to modify the certain areas of the evox.ini through the EvoX dashboard. You will not be able to modify your menu appearance, but through System Utils, you can modify the xbox Settings. At the root of the Evox dashboard menu go to System Utils and you will see a few more options: Settings, Flash Bios, Backup, Skins, Install Menu. Please DO NOT use Flash Bios or Install Menu, these are more advanced features and should only be used by experienced Evox users. Some Featurs of Install Menu will be explained later. Your two main buttons are A and Back. A to select highlighted menu item and Back to back up to the previous menu.

This is what you see at root when you start your xbox

Launch DVD - Item - Launches an xbox game, DVD movie, music cd, etc. MS Dashboard - Item - Launches the default MS dashboard Reboot - Item - Reboots your xbox Power Off - Item - Powers off your xbox System Utils - Section - Opens up system utils Items and sub sections Launch Menu - Section - Opens up Launch Menu Items and sub sections

-Skins-

Very Simple, These are the skins that are located in C:\SKINS\ that you uploaded to your xbox, you can select from many different types or go find or make your own. I prefer the "Info" dash and i recomend you use it. It is the most informative and very easy on the eyes. There are others to choose from, chose whatever you like, and later on, if you get really good, you can find some tools to make your own. (The Writer of this Tutorial is still waiting for an Anna Kornicova Skin HINT HINT HINT)

-EVOX.ini-

You can edit and modifiy this if you like, and if you know what your doing. It works in a similar way to a website, telling the programs where to go when you click n things, you shouldnt need to edit anything at all, although you may wish to for some programs.

*WARNING* Do not touch the FLASH BIOS function within the settings menu unless you strickly know what your doing.

Installing pj64.

Get the file from here (Xbox PJ64) Once got, unzip it to anywhere on your hard drive, but put it into a folder called PJ64. Once thats done, transfer that folder to E:\games on your xbox hard drive. Once thats complete, have a look inside the pj64 folder for a folder called Roms, put all your UNZIPPED roms in here.

Now go back to your evox.ini file, time to edit it. Right click on it from your xbox hard drive, and select edit. now add this line 'AutoAddItem "e:\games\pj64x"' without the commar marks. Just like this picture here

Once that is done, save it and select yes to retransfering back to your xbox. Once thats done, restart your xbox with no cd's in the drive. Scroll down the menu and select launch menu > Games and then PJ64 - X. From here select the rom you want to play on and select the graphics plug in. (some games work better with different plugins, either just mess about or do a search on the net).

Now PJ 64 will load. Remember this is at alpha stage so lots of games will have graphics and loading problems and some games dont work at all, i suggest using star fox or mario 64 to test it out. Enjoy!

For the moment the guide will end here till ive worked out how to put some of the other emu's and apps onto the xbox. I'll update this guide shortly.

Instead of using the old version of PJ64, why not try Surreal 64 which allows a LOT more games to work, especially the larger games. Click HERE! for Surreal 64 Please enjoy this as its hard to get hold of as it has been leaked out by one of the beta testers and places like xbox-scene have placed a ban on discussing it. Enjoy
